You don't need a packed itinerary or a big budget to make the most of summer here. Greater Philadelphia is sitting on a quiet abundance of free experiences—galleries, gardens, historic sites, and waterfront spots that most people drive right past. Here, a few of our favorites.
Walk the Barnes Foundation on a free day.
Kids 18 and under are always free, and the Barnes runs periodic community free days for adults throughout the summer. One of the greatest private art collections ever assembled—Renoirs, Cézannes, Matisses— housed in a building designed specifically to hold them. Check their calendar before you go and plan around a free window.
Spend an afternoon at Awbury Arboretum.
Fifty-five acres of meadow, pond, and trails in Germantown, free and open from dawn to dusk. Bring a book, a picnic, or nothing at all. The farm garden is worth a slow walk-through, and on summer evenings the fireflies are remarkable. It's one of those places that feels like a secret even though it's been there for over a century.
Explore the grounds at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden.
Tucked into West Fairmount Park, Shofuso is an authentic 17th-century-style Japanese house surrounded by a traditional garden and koi pond. Volunteer-run open houses on select weekends are free for all. Check their Instagram for dates. Even walking the exterior grounds on a quiet morning is worth the trip.
Visit Independence National Historical Park
Most Philadelphians have walked past the Liberty Bell without going in, or skipped the Independence Hall tour because it seemed like a tourist thing. Do both, for free. The National Park Service rangers running these programs are genuinely excellent, and standing in the room where the Constitution was debated hits differently than you'd expect. Reserve timed passes online before you go.
Catch a First Friday in Old City.
On the first Friday of every month, Old City galleries open their doors for free — no ticket, no registration, just walk in. Summer First Fridays pull a crowd, and the neighborhood comes alive. Start at the galleries, end up at a bar on 2nd Street, and make a night of it.
Head to Penn Treaty Park at sunset.
One of Philadelphia's lesser-visited riverfront parks, Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown sits right on the Delaware and faces the New Jersey shore. On a clear summer evening, the light on the water is something else. Bring takeout from somewhere on Frankford Avenue and stay until dark.
